Love and Loss

Love and loss. These words transmit the two most intense conditions that humans can experience. They are the two words that most elicit powerful emotional and archetypal responses in us. Love evokes promise, potential, fulfillment, and connection. We all hope for it, desire it, yearn for it, and pray for it. Yet often, we fear it and push it away in overt, subtle, or unconscious ways. Loss evokes pain, vulnerability, heartbreak, anguish, and separation. We don’t want it, wish we didn’t experience it, pray that we won’t, deny and overlook it, and try to prevent it from causing us pain. Yet loss does happen. It undoes us, cracks us open, and brings us to our knees, even as we pretend or imagine that it has not initiated us into impermanence.
